Broken. The Power of the Fragment at Palazzo Strozzi

Organized by Palazzo Strozzi in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the exhibition brings together works that explore the fragment across different periods and cultures.

The exhibition begins with archaeology and sculpture from ancient Egypt, classical Greece, and the Etruscan and Greco-Roman worlds, before moving into modern and contemporary sculpture. Here, the fragment is considered not only as what remains of a lost or damaged work, but also as an artistic element in its own right.

From Michelangelo to Louise Bourgeois

The exhibition features works by Giovanni Pisano, Michelangelo, and Auguste Rodin, alongside contemporary artists including Louise Bourgeois, Huma Bhabha, Robert Gober, Francesco Vezzoli, and Danh Vo.

The exhibition also looks beyond European traditions, with references to the premodern cultures of present-day Mexico, Mali, Peru, and Cambodia. The works bring together different periods, geographic regions, and approaches to sculpture and the idea of the fragment.

Mark Manders at Palazzo Strozzi

As part of the exhibition, Palazzo Strozzi presents a new installation by Dutch-Belgian artist Mark Manders, created for the palazzo's Renaissance courtyard.

The installation will remain on view throughout the exhibition period and is part of Palazzo Strozzi's presentation of the theme of the fragment.
